4-H Awards Night

The annual 4-H Awards Night took place on Saturday, November 1st and was hosted by Todd Emmons of the Alexandria Rotary Club. Todd greeted and welcomed those in attendance and delivered a brief overview of Rotary. On behalf of the Alexandria Rotary Club, Todd also presented the Young Entrepreneur Award to Josh Hedstrom and Samantha Steidl. The award consists of $200 a recognizes going above and beyond the 4-H project experience by using it as a stepping stone to create a business opportunity using the skills and knowledge gained in 4-H.

The United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties

Corliss Stark was the guest speaker at today's Alexandria Rotary Club meeting. She is a volunteer at the United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties and is their Special Events and Volunteer Coordinator.

Corliss noted the positive impact in our community because of the work of the United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties, To do this, the United Way brings the community together to identify the most pressing needs, raises funds needed to make sustainable changes and channels resources to make the most impact with funds.

Kids Against Hunger

Pictured at the left is Dr. Keith Redfield. Keith was invited by Alexandria Rotarian Terry Quist to stop by the Broadway Ballroom for the club's weekly meeting. During Dr. Redfield's visit he shared information about a nonprofit organization called Kids Against Hunger. Their mission to significantly reduce the number of hungry children in the USA and to feed starving children throughout the world. This is being achieved by getting volunteers involved, and by setting up food packaging satellites in the USA, and through partnerships with humanitarian organizations worldwide - enabling Kids Against Hunger to deliver its specially formulated rice-soy casserole to starving children and their families in more than 40 countries. The Kids Against Hunger network currently includes over 30 food packaging satellites across the United States and one in Canada.

Next Tuesday, November 11th, Kids Against Hunger will be packaging food at "In the Pines". Dan Linquist has graciously volunteered his facility (3993 Hwy 27 W) as the fill site. Adults and kids are needed for the fill times of 1-3, 3-5 and 6-8 pm. Please contact Dr. Redfield at 763-4126 if you would like more information or if you are interested in making a contribution to help pay for the food. Each package filled at "In the Pines" will serve 6 children at a cost of 12 cents per serving.
