Viewer Supported Television

Rotarian Don Kramer gave a presentation about Selective TV at today's Alexandria Rotary Club meeting. Selective TV is a non-profit viewer supported organization that was founded over 30 years ago to bring multiple unscrambled television channels to the Alexandria area for viewing by anyone with an antenna. A minimal contribution of $80 per year by members covers the cost of purchasing and maintaining equipment. Some of the channels currently enjoyed on Selective TV are ABC, NBC, CBC, PBS, FOX, UPN, The Weather Channel, History Channel, MSNBC and the Outdoor Channel.

United Way

At the January 21, 2010 meeting of the Alexandria Rotary Club, members were briefed on the many activities of the United Way of Douglas & Pope Counties. Rotarian Sue Jung introduced guest speaker Jessica Boyer, the agency’s community impact director. She shared highlights of some of the United Way’s current initiatives, including Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and programs to provide food vouchers, school supplies and wood for heating to needy families and individuals.

2010-2011 Rotary International Theme

RI President-elect Ray Klinginsmith announced the 2010-11 Rotary International theme, Building Communities -- Bridging Continents, during the opening plenary session of the 2010 International Assembly. "I decided to search for a briefly stated theme that would fulfill two objectives: the first to explain Rotary to non-Rotarians, and the second to validate our work for Rotarians," Klingsmith said. "The words I have selected to describe Rotary's current mission and to highlight our achievements are what we do best: Building Communities -- Bridging Continents. "

Shelterboxes

 
The Alexandria Rotary Club is helping fund the purchase of Shelterboxes that will be sent to Haiti to help those in need.

P.A.W.S.

At its January 14 meeting, the Alexandria Rotary Club pledged the proceeds of the day’s “Good News/Bad News” collection to relief for earthquake-ravaged Haiti. The pot was boosted significantly when visiting Rotarian Natalie Zeleznikar (Rotary Club #25) won the marble drawing and graciously donated the entire proceeds of more than $160 to the Haiti fund.

Rotarian Reed Becker introduced guest speaker Tom Roos, who spoke about the P.A.W.S. (Promoting Abilities With Sleddogs) program. P.A.W.S. allows special needs individuals to experience the fun and therapeutic benefits of dog-sledding.

Sheriff Troy Wolbersen

Frigid temperatures did not deter Alexandria Rotarians, who offered a warm welcome to Douglas County Sheriff Troy Wolbersen at the club’s January 7, 2010 meeting. Introduced by Rotarian Kellie Janssen, Sheriff Wolbersen discussed what’s new in law enforcement in the county, including the construction of the new jail facility and transfer of radio dispatch to an 800 Mhz frequency. He also answered questions about the new jail as well as trends in local criminal activities and law enforcement response.
