2010 Alexandria Rotary 6th Grade Basketball Tourney

We had another fun and successful basketball tournament at Discovery Middle School and Woodland Elementary School (the boys tournament was at Discovery and the girls at Woodland). At both venues, Alexandria Rotarians and other volunteers collected tickets, refereed, kept track of fouls, operated the game clocks and served beverages, pizza from Fat Daddy, tacos in bag and more. It was a fun day and everyone enjoyed well played, competitive basketball.

Mike Roers of Lakes Area Appraisals was the guest speaker at the March 25, 2010 meeting of the Alexandria Rotary Club. He provided an overview of area property value trends over time and discussed factors that have been impacting those trends during the past two years especially.

 The meeting also saw recognition of our newest Paul Harris Fellows, JoEllen Doebbert and Todd Emmons.

Alexandria Technical College Scholarships

The Alexandria Rotary Club provides scholarships to deserving students at Alexandria Technical College and today, a recognition event was held to honor the donors and the recipients. Significant Women in Alexandria's History

In honor of Women’s History Month, Alexandria Rotarians Rachel Barduson, Keri Mohror, Janet Nevalainen and Patty Peterson impersonated significant women from Douglas County history, who told their personal stories of settling this area, building the community, and pursuing their livelihoods.

The Rotarian and Google Books

Full-color issues of The Rotarian are now viewable and searchable at Google Books [link]. Currently, the issues are from 1959 thru 2008 but more issues will follow. A quick search for "alexandria minnesota" uncovered a photo of Big Ole and a letter to the editor from former Alexandria Rotary Club President and District 5950 Governor Joe Perino.

The collaboration is part of an initiative to make Rotary's historical resources more accessible to Rotarians worldwide.

"Google is doing all of the scanning and indexing to make the material searchable -- and at no cost to Rotary," says Stephanie Giordano, archivist for Rotary International.

More than 72,000 pages will be available once Google finishes scanning and uploading all 1,100 issues. The first issue was published in January 1911, when the magazine was called The National Rotarian.

Mary Risner, Alexandria Area Arts Association

At the March 11th Alexandria Rotary Club meeting, Rotarian Reed Becker introduced Mary Risner, manager of the Alexandria Area Arts Association theatre. She spoke on the history of the association, known as the Quad A, as well as current and upcoming programs and opportunities.

Also at today's meeting, the Alexandria Rotary Club inducted four new members . They were Kim Collins (Soderholm Insurance), Bill Bolm (retired), Keith Meyer (Billmark's Insurance) and Brad Nyberg (Nyberg Surveying).
