Giving

The impact of giving was the theme of the April 28 meeting of the Alexandria Rotary Club. Shawn Reilly and Dustin Thornburg, members of the Rotary Foundation Committee, gave a brief presentation on the club’s goals for this year’s Rotary Foundation campaign – 100% member participation!

Then Tom Jacobson introduced Jessica Boyer, executive director of the United Way of Douglas & Pope Counties. She quizzed the members on various aspects of the United Way’s mission, services and impact.

Jefferson High School Team Mechatronics Robotics Team

The Alexandria Rotary welcomed members of the Jefferson High School Team Mechatronics robotics team to their April 21 meeting. The team’s advisor, math instructor Jeremy Bydon, gave a brief overview of the program, and team members Sam Johnson, Ben Roers, Eric Nelson and Zack Hodgson explained how this year’s competition robot was constructed as well as the benefit of the First Robotics program in preparing them for future careers in engineering.

Alexandria Literacy Project

The Alexandria Literacy Project recruits and tutors adults who want to improve their basic reading, writing, spelling and/or math skills. It also tutors adults originally from other countries who want to improve their English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. All these services are provided through a network of support volunteers and volunteer tutors who are trained to work one-to-one with adult learners privately at home or at a community site.

International Service

At today's Alexandria Rotary Club meeting Kevin Hockert introduced fellow Alexandria Rotarian and current Rotary Governor of District 5950, Larry Zilliox. Larry believes deeply in serving the international community as well as our local community. He has participated in many international projects by giving his time to planning and organzing, contributing funds to The Rotary Foundation and by traveling internationally to provide hands on assistance. His hands have been very busy in 2011 as he recently returned from Haiti and prior to that trip Larry was in India. Larry shot many photos during his trip to India and shared with the membership the meaningful affect a small amount of money and effort can have on the lives of the many people living in extreme poverty.
