Zebra Mussels

Stewardship of our natural resources was the focus of the Alexandria Rotary Club meeting on June 30. Guest speaker Carl Towley of Douglas County Citizens’ Committee3 on Zebra Mussels spoke about the opportunity for Douglas County to conduct the world’s first open-water testing of a new biological treatment for zebra mussels. The study, which would treat a 1-acre area of water with 20 gallons of Zequanox, will cost $250,000.

Vaultas

At the June 23 meeting of the Alexandria Rotary Club, Al Crowser introduced John Unger of Vaultas. The new data management and back-up business is located in the old WCCO building, and provides IT storage services for businesses both local and across the state. Under also provided some information and statistics on data back-up regulations and processes.

Relay for Life

At the June 15 meeting of the Alexandria Rotary Club, Randy Eggen introduced guest speaker Lynette Kluver. The chair of this year’s Relay for Life event in Alexandria, Lynette shared information about the American Cancer Society’s long-term cancer prevention study, which will enroll participants at Relay for Life. Alexandria is one of only four sites in the state to recruit participants in this research, which will follow enrollees over the course of 20 years.

Land of the Dancing Sky Area Agency on Aging

Mark Tysver from Land of the Dancing Sky Area Agency on Aging visited Alexandria Rotarians at their June 9 meeting at Broadway Ballroom. The Land of the Dancing Sky Area Agency on Aging is committed to supporting the dignity and independence of older persons of Northwest and West Central Minnesota. Their services include providing advocacy and leadership in the development and support of community based services to reduce isolation and improving access to services.

Hydraid® BioSand Water Filters

Allen Kerr of the Minnetonka Club was the guest at the June 2 meeting of the Alexandria Rotary Club and was introduced by Alexandria Rotarian Mike Johnson. His presentation detailed the Hydraid® BioSand water filter project that the Minnetonka club supports. It provides low cost, portable and durable water filtration systems in countries where uncontaminated water is not readily available. The Minnetonka club has raised almost $16,000 toward the project.
