Special Hockey Program

At the August 25 meeting of the Alexandria Rotary Club, guest speaker Sue Justice provided an overview of the Special Hockey program, which offers playing opportunities for athletes with special needs and disabilities. A new team, the Minnesota Muskies, has been formed in Central Minnesota, the first outstate team. The program will begin this fall, and so far about two dozen athletes have expressed an interest in participating.

Pork and Corn

At the August 18 meeting of the Alexandria Rotary Club, the group celebrated another successful Pork & Corn Feed fundraiser. The event racked up impressive statistics: 2,564 tickets collected at the door, 3,200 pork chops and 370 dozen ears of corn served. The club discussed ways to make next year’s fundraiser even more successful.

Riding the Wind

At the August 11 meeting of the Alexandria Rotary Club, Rotarian Coni McKay introduced guest speaker Al Seltz. Mr. Seltz provided evidence that the sport of wind surfing originated in Alexandria, and showed a photo of himself wind sailing on Lake Geneva in early 1961. He provided a brief history of how the first sailboards were developed by Alexandrian Lou Whinnery and manufactured in Elbow Lake in the early 1960s.

Modern Poultry Farming

At the August 4 issue of the Alexandria Rotary Club, pullet farmer Becky Bruns of Danube, Minnesota provided an overview of modern poultry farming methods. Her family-owned farm cares for rotating flocks of pullets amounting to 2.7 million per year.
