After 20 years of hard work, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all. When Rotary began effort to eradicate polio in 1985, the disease afflicted over 1,000 children each day. Now, there are few than 2,000 cases annually.
It is a window of opportunity of historic proportions. The Gates Foundation has committed $350 million to PolioPlus if Rotarians are able to raise 200 million. To date, Rotary International has raised over 117 million.
You can join in helping by either mailing a contribution to Alexandria Rotary (with PolioPlus written in the memo field) at PO Box 1032, Alexandria, Minnesota or by joining us tonight at the Broadway Ballroom in Alexandria. Our club will be hosting an art auction with proceeds being sent to the PolioPlus program.
