Grand Arbor by Knute Nelson

On a chilly but sunny November day in Minnesota, Alexandria Rotarians arrived at Grand Arbor by Knute Nelson for a meeting outside of their normal Broadway Ballroom meeting space. After a lunch prepared by chef Matthew Jensen and a brief presentation about Grand Arbor by Mark Anderson, President and CEO of Knute Nelson, and Carli Lindemann, Housing Administrator, Rotarians broke up into five groups for guided tours. It even included a stop at the new home of one of their own, Don Krueger. He was one of the first to call Grand Arbor home and he loves it.

Don Kramer, 82

Don Kramer, 82, passed away November 8, 2011. Don was a longtime Alexandria Rotarian and will be missed greatly. He was a good, extremely nice man and could always be counted on Don to lend a hand.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, November 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Alexandria.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 15 from 4 to 7 p.m. with parish prayers at 4:30 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home.

Author Dr. James Mohs

At the November 3 meeting of the Alexandria Rotary Club, guest Rotarian Dr. James Mohs (Melrose club) gave a lively presentation about the process of writing and publishing his first novel, The Fed Man. He described his inspiration for the crime-themed book as well as how he approached publishers and got his book into print.

Comprehensive Land Use Plan

At their October 13 meeting, Alexandria Rotarians split into teams for the annual rose sale fundraiser. They received sales training from a couple of special guests, high class sales consultants “Hot Air” Haase and Dennis Racket and their newest sales recruits Keith Meyer and Brian Gibson. The fundraiser kick-off was followed by a presentation from Dave Rush, Land and Resource Director for Douglas County, who presented a brief overview of the county’s recently completed and approved Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

A School for Ranquitte, Haiti

Burnsville Rotarian and future District Governor Bob Stowell was a special guest at the Alexandria Rotary Club’s September 29 meeting. He reviewed the district’s continuing work in the impoverished island nation of Haiti, and discussed the newest effort: a new school to be constructed in Ranquitte, Pignon, Haiti. He and Alexandria Rotarian Larry Zilliox are spearheading a $300,000 fundraising effort to support the project.

Vocational Visit to Alexandria Police Department

A few times each year the Alexandria Rotary Club will take a week off from the Broadway Ballroom and will instead hold its Thursday meeting at a local business or organization as one of the important aspects of Rotary is to learn more about various vocations in our community and to better understand their daily functions. These vocational visits are a combination of education and social engagement of the members. Today, our meeting was at the new Alexandria Police Department and our members were provided a tour by Officer Jim Gripne and he answered many questions and provided information that helped our members better understand our police force.
