Bill Gates Challenges Rotarians

The fight to eradicate polio has been given a significant monetary boost through new funds pledged by the Bill Gates' charitable foundation, Rotary International and the British and German governments.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded US$255 million to Rotary International, which will match it with US$100 million to be raised over the next three years. At the same time the British and German governments awarded £100 million (US$137 million) and €100 million (US$129 million) respectively to bring the total committed by the four parties to US$630 million.

A Rotary Foundation matching grant allowed Rotarians in the Philippines to launch a dietary campaign geared toward local youngsters in Mandaluyong City. Through the program, Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Mandaluyong are improving the daily nutrition of underprivileged students by ensuring they receive a healthy breakfast. Proper nourishment allows students to focus on their studies rather than their stomachs.

Each year, Alexandria Rotary members contribute to the Rotary Foundation which enables Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. It is a not-for-profit corporation that is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. The Rotary Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary International's sixth president, Arch C. Klumph, as an endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world." It has grown from an initial contribution of $26.50 to more than $117.9 million contributed in 2004-05.

In 2000, RI launched a credit card program that raises money for the Foundation each time a Rotarian uses the card. Last year, RI President Bill Boyd presented Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Lusi Giay with a check for $550,000 in royalties from the credit card program.
